This video combines three phases of the moon filmed over five days (3, 6 and 7 December 2025).
The waxing gibbous moon rose at 6:59 pm on 3 December (obscured by thick cloud until late evening). The cloud thinned but didn't completely clear. However, a 'ghostly' sheen resulted which was quite interesting. Most likely noctilucent clouds (night-shining clouds) or a lunar halo.
The Full Moon of 5 December 2025 was special as it was the third and final Supermoon of 2025, making it appear bigger (up to 8%) and brighter (up to 16%) than average. December's full moon is traditionally called the Cold Moon, reflecting the frigid conditions of winter (Northern Hemisphere), though for New Zealand, it's a summer moon. My footage is from early morning on 6 December as the Supermoon dropped towards the northwest horizon.
The waning gibbous phase was filmed over eight minutes on 7 December (another early start). The thin cirrus clouds illuminated by the moon created nice shadows and patterns before the pre-dawn light took over. Enjoy.
