Attic Load Capacity at Different Points
Distance from Wall Per Joist Capacity Distributed Capacity (4 Joists)
0 feet 500-600 pounds 2000-2400 pounds
3 Feet 300–400 pounds 1,200–1,600 pounds
5 Feet 200–250 pounds 800–1,000 pounds
7 Feet 200–250 pounds 800–1,000 pounds
10 feet 75–100 pounds 300-400 pounds
Near the wall (within 1–2 feet), the joists could support approximately 50–60 psf
Do not exceed weight:
Excessive deflection (sagging).
Long-term weakening of the joists.
Safety concerns if loads aren’t perfectly distributed.
