The Faculty’s Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital (OVAH) is proud to announce the latest addition to its state-of-the-art technology and services, a new high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner and facility, the first of its kind in Africa.
The brand new facility was officially opened by the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria, Prof Tawana Kupe on 26 July 2021.
The acquisition of the new MRI scanner means that the hospital now no longer has to make special arrangements with human hospitals to perform MRI scans. An added advantage is that the OVAH's MRI scanner will be the only high-field MRI in South Africa and Africa with image acquisition optimised for veterinary patients.
In this video a scan of a dog's brain is being performed on the new MRI scanner.
