Regina Kay Walters was born in 1975, and she grew up with her older brother, Brian. From an early age, she dreamed of escaping Texas, of traveling across America to visit bustling cities, and, if she were lucky, even venturing to other countries. By the age of 14, she was determined to make those dreams come true.
At the end of 1989, she met an eighteen-year-old named Ricky Lee Jones, four years her senior. Regina and Ricky are deeply in love. It was a strong, passionate, all-consuming first love. They constantly talked about leaving Texas, perhaps for California or Mexico, wanting to erase their pasts and start anew together. They didn’t know what they would do for a living, but they knew they couldn’t stay in their hometown.
