The Hartsville Nuclear Plant in Tennessee was a TVA project begun on April 28, 1977, to build four reactors, but due to soaring costs, reduced power demand, and opposition after the 1979 Three Mile Island accident, two units were canceled in March 1983 and the rest on August 29, 1984, after about $2.7 billion was spent. The site is now abandoned and the cooling tower is scheduled for demolition in September of 2025.
