The Gion Festival is one of the three largest festivals in Kyoto (along with the Aoi Festival and the Jidai Festival) and it is held annually in July.
At night, the crowds congregate around Shijo Street and Yasaka Shrine, many in yukata. From there, they proceed towards the many stalls selling food, beverages, and assorted trinkets. Street performers offer entertainment throughout the evening.
During daytime, Shijo street is cleared of traffic for the procession of floats (and people)! This procession is so important that it's only been cancelled three times since it was designated as an annual event in the year 970. Spectators get jammed up on the footpaths and because I am short I had to strain to see over the heads of the little old grannies in front of me, so apologies for random people blocking the camera!
