Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson - Scream (80s Mix)

The original version of “Scream” was leaked by American producer Eulonzo on October 27th, 2020. It was unknown this version existed.

Although fans are familiar with the final version that was released on the HIStory album, it has been revealed that “Scream” was originally written & recorded as far back as 1986. This version, along with the original versions of other songs, etc were some of many he had been working on during the early-mid 80s that were shelved. This apparently was made for fun to work with Janet & they later scrapped it only to do a new version in 1995.

During the ‘Bad’ sessions, he had written ‘Scream’ in 1986, not planning it to be with Janet at the time. When his sister Janet took a break from working on her ‘Control’ album, she came to the studio during the Bad sessions and she overheard him singing it and wanted to join him as a duet. They ended up recording it over an entire weekend, and sometime during the session they invited Slash, who was up & coming at the time, over to the studio to appear on the track with his guitar parts. Additionally, Rick James had stopped by and added some instruments, as well as additional vocals towards the ending, and the extended version. They had previously worked together on ‘Victory In Moscow’. His brothers also provided background vocals.

Despite them having a lot of fun working on it together, the song was later scrapped due to fears of being compared to Prince, because the song had some similarities to the Purple one, who had recently declined to duet with him on the song ‘Bad’. Also, the two felt they could do better musically together in the future. Over a decade later, they reworked ‘Scream’ into a whole new version for the HIStory album in 1995.
