Measuring the Distances to the Stars...and the Making of History's Greatest Star Map | Prof Michael Perryman
A spectacular milestone in astronomy and space science has recently taken place. The Gaia star-mapping satellite was launched in December 2013, and is starting its new celestial survey of a staggering one billion stars. The talk will take us on a tour of the history of this ancient science, and explain why measuring star positions remains of such relevance to scientists today. In the process, the speaker, who led the Gaia project in ESA for 15 years, will recall some of the highlights of this extraordinary journey.
