和田三造《南風》1907年、重要文化財 ｜キュレータートーク｜所蔵品解説012

所蔵作品の新たな見方、楽しみ方をお伝えするオンラインキュレータートーク。今回は、和田三造《南風》（1907年、重要文化財）を取り上げます。
この作品は、日本初の官営展覧会「文部省美術展覧会」第一回展でグランプリ（二等賞）を受賞した作品です。作者である和田三造は、自身の難破体験をもとにこの絵を描いたと語りましたが、渡航先については大島説と八丈島説の2つの説がありました。主任研究員の桝田が、当時の船の就航記録や本作に描かれている船の形態を元に、《南風》の謎を解き明かします。

Curator Talks introduce new ways to view and enjoy works in our collection. This time, we will focus on “South Wind” (1907), National Important Cultural Property) by Wada Sanzo. This work won the highest award at the first Bunten (Ministry of Education Fine Arts Exhibition), Japan's first government-sponsored art exhibition. The artis stated that he created this painting based on his own shipwreck experience, but there are two different theories regarding the location: Oshima Island and Hachijojima Island. Curator Masuda will unravel the mystery of “South Wind” based on ship sailing records from the time and the ship's form depicted in the work.
