Twenty years ago, Rem Koolhaas and Charlie Koolhaas landed in Dubai to begin their respective observations and analyses of what was then, in 2005, the ultimate 21st century “start-up city.” Their collaborative research at the time — through photography, essays, exhibitions and books such as “Al Manakh 1” and “Al Manakh 2” — understood the convulsions of this post-oil Gulf city-state within the broader historical force of a new, postwestern future. Twenty years later, in this candid conversation, Rem Koolhaas and Charlie Koolhaas take measure of how the New New Gulf City—Doha, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh to name a few alongside Dubai—has evolved from exception to present-day paradigm.
