🎶 Another Sofa Lounge Session — relaxed takes on songs that shaped the blues (and me!) 🎶
Today’s song is “Before You Get Up,” another tune from my 2021 album Let The Party Begin, reinterpreted here in true Sofa Lounge fashion. A friend once told me the song had a touch of Tony Joe White about it, and when I went digging, I actually found a TJW track with a very similar groove, tempo, and key. So for fun, I experimented with blending some of those elements into this version. Can you spot which Tony Joe White song it is?
The lyrics are simple, but the idea behind them is something we all know well: before we reach the peak of anything in life, we usually go through dips we have to fight our way out of. And even though there may be many paths in front of us, sometimes it only takes one road to lead us exactly where we need to be.
A bit about Tony Joe White:
Often called one of the most underrated artists of his era, Tony Joe White blended blues, swamp rock, country and soul into something unmistakably his own. His deep voice, laid-back phrasing, and hypnotic grooves influenced countless musicians, even if he didn’t always get the spotlight he deserved. When you listen closely, you realise just how powerful and inventive he was, a true architect of the “swamp rock” sound.
