General Guide of mine:
As I started playing TFT a while ago, I thought the game was based on 90% luck and 10% strategy. Yet, the more I play and read, the more I realize luck has a smaller percentage in this game. The game doesn't always go as you plan, so make sure to have plans B, C, and D.

Saving gold for higher tiers is the best strategy, but you also have to maintain a balance to not lose too much HP. Therefore, you should build a decent team from whatever the shop can give you. Items like Jeweled Gauntlet and Gargoyle Stoneplate are good general choices since they can be used on many champions. The main idea is to not lose much HP and to level up to higher tiers. However, many times other teams will max out their team early, and by the time you reach level 8 or 9, you may not have a strong team to fight with. So, as soon as you see that defeat is approaching, switch your plan and aim to create a team from the champions available at your current level. It's better to start doing that when your HP is around 20, as that means you have 1-3 more losses left.

One of the most recent pieces of important information I've learned is that the champions in the shop are limited per tier. Therefore, keep scouting to see what others are building, and you will understand your chances of building the composition you want.

Finally, you might even consider building a champion you don't need, just to prevent your opponent from upgrading it to 3 stars.
