To commemorate Sir Joshua Reynolds' 'Portrait of Mai' as it left the Gallery on the 'Journeys with Mai' tour, Hinatea Colombani and Moe Meder led a workshop demonstrating how to make the traditional Tahitian tapa cloth which Mai wears in the portrait.
The workshop, funded by the J. Paul Getty Trust, took place at the National Portrait Gallery on 20 and 21 March 2025. Over two days, project partners, curators, academics, representatives from the J. Paul Getty Museum, along with Tahitian artists and researchers, came together to discuss and explore Mai and his legacy.
Journeys with Mai is a partnership project between the National Portrait Gallery, London; Bradford District Museums and Galleries; The Fitzwilliam Museum, in collaboration with the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Cambridge; and The Box, Plymouth.
