In this clip from his classes on the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, Paramahamsa Prajnananandaji discusses why seekers need to discipline the body and a couple of ways to do so. He illuminates the idea that for every activity we undertake in our lives there is a special way we use our bodies - this in itself is a kind of discipline. When we sleep we lay down, when we eat we sit in a certain way and use our hands and mouths in a specific way. Paramahamsaji points out that we should discipline ourselves even when we are alone.
Paramahamsaji also discusses how discipline of the body extends to the food we eat. With scriptural references including from chapter six of the Bhagavad Gita, he makes clear that “the food you eat also eats you,” and discusses what this means and how we can avoid the negative effects of our indiscipline on our sadhana.
