Like so many in the fandom I was terribly saddened to hear of Britt Allcroft's passing in the closing days of 2024. As someone who’s in the second half of undergrad, the world of Thomas and all of his silly pals are obviously not at the forefront of my mind all of the time. For better or worse that time is devoted to my studies, grad school, and other pertinent matters in my own personal life. But that doesn't mean he hasn't left me. In fact, I cannot remember a time in one's life where Thomas didn't occupy a space in my heart, and whilst I am not the most active member of the community, I have made some terribly cherished friendships within the fandom. Thomas & Friends was such an integral part of my childhood, and I suspect like many of you here, I simply could not imagine the person I'd be without him.

As we all know, the Island of Sodor and it's wonderous inhabitants had existed for decades before Britt Allcroft came along, in the form of Wilbert Awdry's stories. A whole other universe had been created in those books, but it was Britt Allcroft who saw the indefinable magic that lay within them. Her attempts weren't even the first to bring the world to the screen. But her attempt was going to be different, it was the one that was going to succeed, and I can say with complete conviction she met that goal with flying colors. Obviously, the success of the 1984 series is not down to Britt Allcroft alone. That honor goes to all of the crew such as David Mitton, the various narrators the series would have, the talented model makers, the composers, every contributor on the series made it a household name, and by that extension, propelled the Island of Sodor to our lives. She made him a star, and I will always be thankful for that.

While it is a tragedy to start the 80th anniversary year in these terribly melancholic circumstances, we can find solace knowing that we are all truly blessed to have Thomas as a part of our lives. He is always there, he always has been, and I suspect, he always will be no matter what challenges life manages to toss in our direction. The Island of Sodor is in many ways, a second home to many of us, and it was Britt Allcroft who brought us this home. So, here's to Britt, the Awdrys, the wonderful crew, and the marvelous Island of Sodor. There simply isn't anything quite like it.
