In this video we look at a hidden Sculpture trail in Manchester. The sculpture trail is situated in the River Medlock valley in the Ancoates area of Manchester. This is very much a story of urban regeneration and urban re wilding. The area around Ancoates and Beswick was very industrial and there were lots of terraced victorian streets in the River Medlock valley. For years nature has been reclaiming the area since the slum clearances of the 1960's and 1970's. However this green area around Limekiln lane off Pin Milll brow in Manchester was dangerous and abused by certain groups. Now a community project has come together. Named 'The Friends of the Medlock valley' They have created urban renewal and aided the re wilding of the area. This small green space now has wildflowers growing attracting Bees and birds in the meadow that was a former Industrial site. Manchester city centre is ever present but fades into the distance amongst birdsong. Water features, bridges and a mini stonehenge can be found. It has the backing of Manchester city council and Manchester University. This is a true community project regenerating a former Industrial area. Obviously using old maps and archive photographs of Manchester we can look back into the history of Ancoates, Manchester and Beswick.
