San Diego Zoo Elephant Odyssey
Here we will find modern day counterparts to animals that roamed Southern California between 1.8 million to 10 thousand years ago. During this time period Southern California was home to unique animals such as Saber-toothed cats, Lions, Mammoths, Tapirs & Camels.
First we will come across a series of burrows that are connected, this is home to Red Diamond, Southwestern Speckled and Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes. Rattlesnakes have resided in this region long before the Mammoths roamed.
Across from the Rattlesnakes we find Nature's Clean-up Crew a multi species habitat featuring Condors and Ravens.
Down the Path we come across the relatives of the Extinct Large-headed Llama, both Llama and Guanaco can be found here. Another mix species exhibit follows this with Dromedary Camels and Pronghorns,.
A series of exhibits housing insects teaches us that the more than two million insects species plays a vital role in the environment. Terrariums house Jade-Headed Buffalo Beetle, Dead Leaf Mantis, Spiny Stick Insect as well as the Sunburst Diving Beetle.
Up the pathway we come across the resident Elephants both Asian and African can be find here. San Diego Zoos Elephant herd is made up of older non-breeding elephants.
A small aviary houses to species of bird the Secretary and the Black-Billed Magpie. Another multi-species exhibit houses Tapirs and Capybara. Jaguars, African Lion and Dik Dik round out the exhibits in the Elephant Odyssey.
