Ben Griffith was hired to be the OC @ GaSouthern former DC Erk Russell of the UGA national title winning junkyard defense re-started the football program. Griffith had a special dual threat QB by the name of Tracy Ham and wanted to create an offense that best fit Ham's skillsets of both running and throwing. At this time in 1985, the Houston Gamblers of the USFL spring football league was all the rage running an offense that was piling up yardage and putting up numbers with a former University of Miami QB by the name of Jim Kelly. The Run-n-shoot as it was called, caught the eye of Griffith and Griffith soon made his way to Houston to learn the offense from its architect, a coach by the name of Mouse Davis. Griffith took what he learned from Coach Davis in the passing game and combined it with the triple option. Griffith wouldn't use a TE, he would use Run-n-shoot formations, Flexbone formations and have his slotbacks line-up in the backfield as halfbacks and run wishbone formations and backfield.
The following year in '86, Griffith got the opportunity to move up the FCS(FKA D-1AA) level to the FBS(FKA D-1A) when he was hired to be the OC at the University of New Mex7ico. After Griffith's departure, GASOUTHERN decided to promote its young DL Coach to OC. Erk Russell wanted to scrap the offense yet were currently for a more heavy TE focused offense and the new OC cautioned against it and preached patience, that young was Paul Johnson. GaSouthern would go on to win the FCS national title in Paul Johnson's 1st year as OC and his QB would have one of the all-time performances in a championship game by throwing for over 400 yds and running for another 100 in a come from behind victory against Furman University.
In this clinic, Griffith installs the streak concept as he was taught and cliniced on by Mouse Davis.
