Ford 600 and 800 Tractor Fuel Shut Off Hack!? [[Easy O-ring Replacement?]]

This is one of my many crazy ideas, but this time I think it is a good one! I am working on a family members Ford 600. Over the years this fuel shut off has been replaced multiple times. Always because of a 5 cent O-ring. To remove this shut off you must take off the hood and gas tank. Which took me a few hours to do by myself. I even bought a new shut off valve to replace the old one. Then I realized I would just be putting a bandage on the problem. All this could have been avoided if you could just get the shut off apart, but it was not designed that way. My new and improved version will be!
One of my favorite things to do is not just fix things, but try and improve them. I love tearing stuff apart and trying to put it back together better than it was. Even small things. A lot of time small things become big issues. Often my ideas don’t always work out like I have planned. From time to time though I get excited about one of my improvements. This is one of them.
I am no expert tractor mechanic by any means. Most of my experience is on my Ford 8n. As well as my Case backhoe. Luckily Ford 600’s and 800’s are just big 8n’s. One thing that is different between the two is the fuel shut off. 8n’s do not have a shut off on the tank like most 600’s. It is on the sediment bowl. Making this issue not a problem. Although many of these tractors fuel systems vary by year models.
It really amazes me how tractors and automobiles are constructed. It seems like nothing is made with a mechanic in mind. Anything with a o-ring should be easy to change out. Especially when dealing with fuel systems. This task would have been much easier if there was enough clearance above the valve cover to remove the shut off. Although you would still have to replace the entire shut off valve. Which was around $30. All for a 5 cent o-ring.
I really didn’t plan this out the way I should have. Honestly though, I rarely do. My biggest regret was grabbing a random drill bit to drill out the retaining rivet. If I planned it out a little better I could have matched the tap to the drill. Instead of finding a bolt to fit the random sized hole. It thankfully all worked out though.
I still am not a 100% sure if this is a great idea or not. I will let you and time be the determining factor. If nothing else I hope you enjoy the video.
