UNIFIL peacekeepers have started clearing landmines and unexploded bombs to help people access their land, after this work was put on hold for nearly two years.
This support, part of an agreement with the Lebanese army, was requested by the Lebanese government.
Cambodian and Chinese peacekeepers cleared mines from 18,000 square metres near Blida and Maroun ar-Ra’s.
Clearing mines is not enough to protect residents. UNIFIL also stresses the importance of helping people understand the dangers, so they can stay safe.
In early October, Qana School hosted a workshop to raise awareness, teaching students how to stay safe from unexploded weapons with help from specialists, UNIFIL Italian peacekeepers, and the Lebanese Army.
Together, mine clearing and awareness efforts help keep communities safe.
