Spitfires and Messerschmitts are fighting a war at 20,000 feet.
Meanwhile, a P-51 Mustang, sleek, fast, and already gasping for air, levels off at 12,000. Its single-stage Allison engine won’t let it climb much higher.
The pilot scans the empty sky. He was issued four Brownings and a camera; the camera gets more work.
On paper, his Mustang should match anything the Luftwaffe flies. In the European sky, it can’t even reach the fight.
But, somewhere in England, Rolls-Royce engineers are teaching the Mustang to breathe thin air, creating the long-range escort that will carry the war to Berlin.
