Please join me for the second part of this visit to the Sochaczew Narrow Gauge Railway.
The Sochaczew Narrow Gauge Railway Museum (Polish: Muzeum Kolei Wąskotorowej w Sochaczewie) is a 750 mm heritage railway located in Sochaczew, about 50 kilometres west of Warsaw. The museum is home to a fleet of historic 750mm gauge steam, diesel and electric locomotives along with a substantial collection of rolling stock including some standard gauge exhibits.
Part of the railway has been restored between the museum and the Kampinos Forest with trains running on Saturdays from the end of May until mid-September along with some additional services on Wednesdays during the summer holidays.
The museum, a branch of the Railway Museum in Warsaw was established in 1984 and opened to the public in 1986. Due to the uncertain status of land ownership and financial difficulties the future of both is uncertain.
A brief history
Regular service trains on the Sochaczew County Narrow Gauge Railway ended on 30th November 1984 and the museum was established in December of that year. In the early days repairing, renovating and protecting the premises were the main aims, along with carrying out necessary repairs to the permanent way, locomotives and rolling stock. Archives and some of the smaller items were exhibited in the main station building.
Sporadic train services began running in May 1986 and the museum opened to the public in September 1986. By the end of 1986 the museum had collected 107 vehicles, including 33 steam locomotives and by 2009 the total number for all types of rolling stock had reached 263, including 56 steam locomotives, after scrapping and selling several items this number fell to 228 by 2011.
There are still some vehicles requiring substantial restoration before they can be put on public display.
In the late 1980s the track and two bridges were repaired, culminating in the Technical Commission of Narrow Gauge Railways (Polish: Komisja Techniczna z Zarządu Kolei Dojazdowych) granting permision to operate the line to Wilcze Tułowskie on the 10th July 1991, the current terminus of the line.
