Salutations to all our viewers, we are here taking you into a model arecanut dehusking factory or a unit. Here more than hundred peoples engaged in dehusking activity. It is called as ‘ADIKE KANA’ Its story is very impressive and interesting. What is the special in this unit, where it is located and what are the advantages of this type of units, we can see here.
This areca nut processing unit is located at Kanle village, Sagara taluk Shimogga district. This is the major arecanut producing area at Malenadu belt. At Kanle village, there are 100 and above Okkaliga community families are residing. They choose this occupation for their lively hood. Here throughout the year arecanut is available for dehusking. Arecanut is the agriculture produce which fetch market value only after removing its husk. Dehusking is the major hurdle in arecanut processing everywhere. Some machinery are came for this process, but still 90% above people are dependent on manual dehusking. Here they can get more perfection than machineries. Here growers are not facing any hardship in manual dehusking the produce. They bring loads of raw arecanut here and they get it back dehusked product in a day. Due to the effort of more than 100 people, the outcome is 2 tons and above. It is possible in this KANA only. It is called as manual dehusking factory. Here Kana runs from morning 9 to night 10. Majority of women workers do this job in their free time. Even some school and college students also work here during their holiday time. In this unit they can earn some income. Most of them dehusk around 25 kg and above. In this KANA one who is not able to do hard physical work, they can also work here. So we can find here aged persons also.
Dehuskers are only locals. But growers are bringing arecanut from Sagara, Soraba, Siddapura, Hosanagara Shikaripura, Siganduru etc places. Grower can bring their arecanut by appointment. This Kana is the solly owned by Okkaliga community and they are the administrative body. In administrative body president, secretary and board of directors are there. President or secretary will manage the arrivals. If you are having around 500 bags of raw arecanut, you can’t bring all at a time. The secretary will instruct how much quantity should be for a day. This is because everyone should get benefit. Next you can ask the fresh date for procurement.
This KANA is running here from last 40 years. In beginning they started in a temporary shed. Now with the contribution of localites and local MLA they constructed a building. Here all facilities are available. It is like community hall. If any marriage and any ceremonies, they will do it here . On such occasions there is a holiday for dehusking activity.
In malenadu belt arecanut growers do red supari and white supari. Red supari is the tender supari, which is dehusked freshly and boiled. From October to January here all are engaged in dehusking tender supari. After that they start the ‘Chali’ or ‘Gotu’ arecanut.
The president of this Kana Mr.Krishnappa says it is the only Kana having good image from last 40 years. It is the only private society maintained by a community. So that every grower who brings nuts are satisfied. From starting to till now there was no complaint from any growers. Mr. Suresh Gowdru from Kanle, is the permanent customer, who give good opinion to this Kana.
In our country man power is the main asset. But now we are facing serious manpower shortage in agriculture sector. People like agrarian work but they want this type of facilities. Here work is fast and no shortage of workers.
This aged lady works here from 20-25 years. She says we are unable to work in plantations. Here we have freedom for work. So how much work I do here I can get remuneration. If it is les or more, no mater, I am satisfied.
If you bring raw nuts to dehusk here it is not necessary of your presence for full day. At the time of output calculation your presence is required. Here still they measure quantity of output by kilogram, It is calculated by a container called ‘GIDNA’ . It measures around 2.5-3 kgs. For one GIDNA worker will get Rs.25. A person can de husk an average 10-15 GIDNA of nuts.
It is the ideal system of rural employment and rural economic Empowerment. Here rural households are satisfied with system and they got some permanent income source. Now our Karnataka state becoming a hub of arecanut plantation. In future days this type of dehusking and other plantation work force is very much necessary. Thank you for all.
