The canoe bumped against my shoulder as I finished the short 0.3-mile carry, the trail easing downward until it broke open onto the sandy put-in beach at Lake Lila. The lake gleamed in the afternoon light, rippling with the promise of wilderness. Pulling the canoe into the water, I stepped in and felt the world hush as the paddle dipped and pulled, guiding me along the forested shoreline. The air smelled of pines, the water dark and glassy beneath the canoe. I glided on toward campsite #4, stepping ashore to scout its rocky shoreline and visit its quiet fire ring, but restlessness tugged me back to the paddle. Pushing out, I crossed the broad expanse of the lake, past Spruce Island rising like a sentinel and then other sites tucked beneath the towering white pines. At last, campsite #18 appeared before me, its beach wide and welcoming, and I knew it was time to make camp.
