Bank of Botswana Celebrates 50 Years of Stability and Progress
Botswana’s central bank marked its Golden Jubilee on Thursday, celebrating half a century of steering the nation’s economy and safeguarding the Pula.
President Advocate Duma Boko led dignitaries, staff, and citizens at the Bank of Botswana headquarters, calling the 50th anniversary a moment of pride and vision.
“This milestone is not only about looking back at what we have achieved,” President Boko said. “It is also about imagining the future we want to build for Botswana.”
Founded on July 1, 1975, the Bank has been at the centre of the country’s financial system, protecting the integrity of the national currency,the Pula and Thebe introduced in August 1976. Over five decades, it has steered Botswana through global and regional challenges, maintaining modest inflation and preserving the value of people’s earnings.
President Boko praised the institution for creating conditions that allow businesses to grow, families to save and invest, and government programmes to deliver development across communities.
As part of the celebrations, the Bank unveiled a commemorative P50 banknote honouring both its 50 years of service and Botswana’s Olympic gold medallist, Letsile Tebogo and the Relay team.
The President said the note reflects “economic strength and national pride,” adding that the Bank’s work will continue to inspire future generations to build a resilient and inclusive economy.
