Harold Bauer plays Liszt's Un Sospiro (1942 recording)

British pianist Harold Bauer's January 9, 1942 Victor recording of Liszt's Un Sospiro, recorded at his last ever studio session. The transfer in this upload derives from the third volume devoted to Bauer's 78s issued on the St Laurent Studio label:

The pianist had previously recorded the work on May 15, 1928 for the same label. Throughout his recording career Bauer recorded for various labels: Victor (1928-29), HMV (1935), Schirmer (1939), and once again Victor (1942). His complete solo recordings are available on the APR label, while St Laurent Studio has offered different volumes in a different flow and without filtered sound - increased surface noise but a fuller frequency range.

This 1942 performance was captured a few months before the pianist's 69th birthday and finds him in very fine form, with his glorious singing tone, wonderful balance of voices, and exquisite phrasing all impeccably coordinated.
