Having learned his trade working for the grand master of haute couture, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Ungaro was part of a small circle of designers trained in the art of tailoring during the 1960s.

He will forever be remembered alongside colleagues Yves Saint Laurent, André Courrèges and Paco Rabanne as the last generation of Parisian haute couture.

Two years after creating the Emanuel Ungaro maison in 1965, he moved the atelier to what has become his permanent location on the historic Avenue Montaigne, claiming his own space in the heart of the French capital's Couture district.

It must be said, however, that he did not limit himself to reproducing the haute couture he saw around him.

For his first collection, he debuted with sensational mini-dresses rather than classic evening gowns. His mini-dresses were paired with contrasting prints, quilted leather and high boots, establishing Ungaro as the designer of the 60s, so much so that WWD called him "the new cat for couture".
