This beautifully written and humorous fishing tale highlights just how difficult it was to catch carp back then and the lengths some anglers were prepared to go to in their pursuit of such creatures. Along the way you’ll hear echoes from the past, some of which have become the founding principles of modern carp angling. You’ll also find, nestled within the text, myths and beliefs that are so tightly woven into the fabric of carp fishing that they still persist to this day!
This is a story narrated by our dear friend and professional audiobook narrator, Rafe Beckley, and is from the book Coarse Angling, written by H.T. Sheringham and published in 1912.
Sheringham was one of the most famous all-round anglers of his time and was the angling editor of The Field, the world's oldest country and field sports magazine which has been published continuously since 1853. At the time this story was published, only a dozen carp weighing more than 8 pounds were caught in any given year, so for him, this was a capture to write home about.
