Very few people know about Toy Matinee, especially here in Europe. I could have easily fooled many by pretending that this was my bass part. But it’s not. The bass player in Toy Matinee was the incredible Guy Pratt and this bass part is out of this world. In Toy Matinee the bass has a very prominent role and is a crucial part of the song. It’s not just pumping 8th notes and keeping time. Not that is anything wrong with that.
I think it’s really sad that Toy Matinee doesn’t get the recognition and praise they deserve. Their sound was truly unique. Sadly, we’ll never see another album cause the singer Kevin Gilbert died in the mid 90’s.
I’ve tried to play this pretty much as Guy Pratt did. Don’t know if I succeeded but that was my aim. I know I play more ghost notes than him. But that just my style and way of handling a bass part like this.
