The history of Timor‑Leste (East Timor) is one of the most powerful stories of resilience, resistance, and self-determination in modern history. Located between Southeast Asia and the Pacific, Timor-Leste’s past has been shaped by ancient settlement, colonial neglect, brutal occupation, and a hard-won fight for independence.

In this video, we explore Timor-Leste’s journey from ancient Austronesian and Melanesian cultures that settled the island over 40,000 years ago, through centuries of Portuguese colonial rule, which introduced Catholicism and European influence while leaving the region largely undeveloped.
