MG3 Hybrid+ Real World MPG Test - How Far Can It Go On ONE TANK???

Here we go again! Hello guys and welcome back to Car Obsession. Some of you may remember that a few weeks ago I drove the new Suzuki Swift from here in Worthing to Falmouth, and back to see how good the fuel economy was.

That’s a round trip of 522 miles, which as it so happens was the theoretical range of the Swift. How on Earth is this relevant to the MG3 Hybrid, I hear you ask? Well, believe or not, but the MG3 Hybrid has the same fuel economy figure as the Suzuki, 64.2mpg on a combined run.

The MG3 has a minor handicap, though – its fuel take offers 36 litres whereas the Swift has 37. It’s only one litre, but it could well be the difference between success and failure. As with the Suzuki test, there are no exterior GoPros as I don’t want to create any drag, which again, could be all the difference.

Now we’re on the road let me talk you through the MG3 Hybrid+ (zoom in on the plus bit). Under the Battersea Blue body there is a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which is aided by a 100kW electric motor.

Together they produce 194hp along with 425Nm. 0-62 comes in a respectable 8 seconds, considerably better than the Suzuki Swift, and the top speed in case you’re really interested, is 106mph, which I believe is actually the same as the Swift. As I mentioned earlier, the MPG is 64.2mpg, and the CO2 emissions come in at 100g/km.

Let’s have some other headline features for the MG3 Hybrid+ shall we? In case this is your top requirement for this sector of car, this is the fastest accelerating hybrid B segment car. So not only can you get to speed quickly, but hopefully you’ll make Greta Thunberg happier in the process. This has a larger battery compared to rivals, meaning it can run on EV only for longer, and it’s larger and more spacious compared to its predecessor.

Seeing as it wasn’t that long ago I drove the Suzuki Swift, it makes sense to make some comparisons, although this isn’t a back-to-back test of course. For starters, I prefer the interior of the MG3. Yes, OK, it’s darker than some caves in here, thanks to plenty of black throughout and the black headlining, but it feels more up to date than the Swift. I wouldn’t call the Swift dated or old-fashioned, but this, in my opinion at least, feels more contemporary.

I prefer the design of the touchscreen as well, it looks a bit less aftermarket, and you also get a digital instrument cluster whereas the Swift is mostly analogue. This is of course subjective, but I think the exterior of the MG3 is better looking than the Swift, especially in this Battersea Blue, which is a darker blue than my camera lens would suggest.
