Why my teenager can't talk? Exploring SELECTIVE MUTISM

Today we start the journey of a teenager that can't talk outside her home.
This is the first part of the interview with Dianne who has a 13 years old teenager who has selective mutism and social anxiety.

What is selective mutism? Many parents worry that their child is refusing to talk.

Selective Mutism is an anxiety disorder described in the DSM5, that affects young children and teenagers and can last till adulthood if not treated. Who has selective mutism is NOT choosing to speak, but it is anxiety.

I like to make videos on child anxiety and selective mutism to help parents and teachers understand the child's anxiety symptoms, or if a child is more than shy, what is the child fearful of. We help and support children with Selective Mutism and it is so important to use effective strategies to talk to your child about their anxieties.

Selective Mutism is often missed or completely misunderstood. It is important to find the right child therapist that has had training in anxiety and selective mutism, to help parents understand why their child is scared of communicating.
If Selective Mutism is treated early, children with Selective Mutism can make great progress and overcome social anxiety and selective mutism.
