The 1975-1976 Chevrolet Cosworth Vega was a bold step by General Motors to blend high-performance engineering with the compact economy car market. At its heart was the 2.0-litre DOHC inline-four engine, developed in collaboration with the legendary British engineering firm Cosworth.
This aluminium engine featured sophisticated advancements for the time, such as a forged steel crankshaft and electronic fuel injection, marking a significant leap in technology. Delivering 110 horsepower, it was a considerable upgrade over the standard Vega's engine.
The car also featured a tuned suspension and larger brakes to handle the added performance, making it agile and enjoyable to drive.
Cosmetically, the Cosworth Vega stood out with its signature black and gold paint scheme, gold pinstriping, and unique alloy wheels, exuding a sporty aesthetic. Inside, it offered special touches like bucket seats and a custom dashboard with a tachometer and Cosworth emblems.
Despite its innovative features, the car faced stiff competition and a high price tag, limiting its sales to just over 3,500 units in two years. However, the Cosworth Vega remains a unique and collectible piece of Chevrolet history, celebrated by enthusiasts for its engineering ambition and rarity, more rarer than the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split Window.
