We're all aware of what a native speaker can sound like, but is there such a thing as a “native learner”- someone who’s in between being a learner and a native speaker? In minority language learning contexts lots of learners aren't necessarily starting completely from scratch. Instead, these learners might speak a dialect of the majority language which recalls features of the minority language their community once spoke over 100 years ago.
In this talk I'll define what it means to be a native learner by focussing on examples from Wales and adult learners who are from Wales but grew up speaking English. I'll consider some findings from a research project on intonation that tries to establish whether these native learners' first language backgrounds might put them at an advantage over other kinds of people learning Welsh as adults. There’s a popular idea in Wales that local learners outperform learners from elsewhere. I’ll put this idea to the test and play some examples of the idiomatic sing-song intonation of Welsh.
