On this trip, we were driving on the Cangyu Expressway (G1812) between Wutai and Wutai Mountain.
Before the full Cangyu Expressway (Cangzhou–Yulin) was completed, this stretch was signed as the Xinfu Expressway (Xinzhou–Fuping) and still serves as the final 18 km to the “Gateway of Mount Wutai.” It climbs from 800 m just southeast of Wutai County seat to 1,200 m at Shizui Town, runs 60 % bridges and tunnels, and is nicknamed “the 3-D corridor.” Viaducts and tunnels alternate, the steepest grade hits 4.8 %, and the tightest curve swings through only a 400 m radius.
This is a brief journey, driving along the road where the most spectacular stone walls and the most winding mountain highways of the Taihang Mountains unfold before your eyes.
