Not far from the historic town of Fort Benton, the Missouri Breaks begin—250 wild river kilometers, virtually unchanged since the time of Lewis and Clark. The two adventurers and explorers enthusiastically described the rugged cliffs more than 200 years ago in their journals. Dirk Rohrbach embarks on a journey to trace their footsteps and meets Jennifer Darlington, whose family has been raising cattle by the river for generations. Together, they climb through deep slot canyons to breathtaking viewpoints.

Then, a new section of the river begins. With the vast Fort Peck Lake, Dirk enters the nearly 1,000-mile stretch through the enormous prairie reservoirs, notorious for thunderstorms, meter-high waves, and relentless headwinds.

He meets Rod Gorder, a sport fisherman who takes him out on the lake in his boat. Just before the state line to North Dakota lies Fort Union, once the most important trading post for furs on the Missouri. The Great Plains of North America are home to the Plains Indians. On the shores of Lake Sakakawea, Dirk learns from the descendants of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara how they are rediscovering their culture after decades of oppression.
