In this aria from Act III, Bizet describes the beautiful calm of nightfall in Spain. Micaëla, the girl whom Don José originally seemed destined to marry, has risked the wilds of the countryside to come and try to save him from the clutches of the dangerously fickle Carmen. But the threads of fate have already spelled out a tragic end to his and Carmen's relationship. This lovely music describes how Micaëla intends to confront Carmen, although she is really afraid of her.
