Let's dive into the remarkable legacy of the Tai-Ahom people of Assam. For over six centuries, they have left their remarkable mark on the landscape by building moidams - burial mounds that harmoniously blend with the natural beauty of hills, forests, and waterways. Charaideo Moidams in Sivasagar, the 43rd UNESCO World Heritage Site of India, is the largest burial site with the most concentration of moidams.
Within this enchanting site, you can explore ninety moidams - each a unique hollow vault crafted from brick, stone, or earth. These structures vary in size, boasting underground chambers designated for different roles: one for the revered king, others for loyal servants and caretakers, as well as spaces for beloved horses and elephants that served them in life. The height of each mound tells a story, serving as a testament to the power and stature of the buried king, inviting you to reflect on the rich history and culture woven by the Tai-Ahom.
