EWMD hosted a high-impact online panel discussion on AI governance and algorithmic bias, bringing together expert voices from engineering, governance, business, and ethics to explore how artificial intelligence is shaping - and often distorting - power, visibility, and opportunity in digital systems.
The event was moderated by Nadine Nembach, former EWMD International Co-President, Project Leader of the Brussels Declaration, and CEO of N2 Consulting & Training.

Deploying tactical defenses while pushing for systemic change

Quantifying the real business impact of AI bias, beyond engagement metrics, by calculating revenue loss

Speakers and Perspectives
Ruth M. Dasarry Sierra, Founder of Genesis Coaching Company, PhD in Engineering, and AI Execution Architect, brought a deeply technical and business-oriented perspective. With over 13 years of experience in engineering systems and manufacturing, she supports women entrepreneurs in building and scaling businesses through systems, frameworks, and AI integration.
Ruth is known for documenting platform discrimination with data-driven precision, translating complex AI governance failures into actionable business strategies. Her work focuses on the intersection of engineering systems, algorithmic transparency, regulatory compliance, and revenue protection for women-led businesses navigating biased digital infrastructures.
Johannes Gottschalk, PhD researcher at the Department of Islamic Studies (DIRS) at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), contributed a unique ethical and philosophical lens. His research explores how artificial intelligence shapes human fear, meaning, and responsibility, particularly in ethical and religious contexts. His work sits at the intersection of AI, governance, and theology, raising critical questions about how technology can remain accountable to human values.
Key Insights
Ruth highlighted that while AI adoption is accelerating rapidly, governance frameworks are lagging dangerously behind. Through real-world case studies - including biased worker algorithms, discriminatory visa systems, and failures in financial compliance - she demonstrated how lack of transparency, accountability, and human oversight leads to systemic harm.
Johannes emphasized the limitations of AI systems, particularly large language models, warning against overestimating their reasoning capabilities and delegating moral or societal decisions to opaque technologies.
A Mentimeter poll revealed that many participants suspected their content had been algorithmically suppressed on digital platforms. When platforms denied any issues, participants reported feelings of frustration, distrust, and powerlessness, highlighting the emotional and economic impact of opaque algorithms.
Ruth shared practical strategies for entrepreneurs, including documenting performance over 90 days, running A/B tests, and diversifying platforms. She noted that algorithmic suppression can cost businesses €10,000-15,000 per month in lost revenue.

Conclusion and Call to Action
The discussion concluded with a clear call to action: AI governance is not optional. Participants were encouraged to build AI literacy, engage in advocacy efforts, explore open-source and alternative platforms, and actively contribute to shaping fairer, more transparent AI systems aligned with human and societal values.
