March 23, 2016, the day Erin changed and a day the Byers family will never forget. Erin woke up and started doing tics, that were both frequent and alarming to a family who's never encountered it before. After googling sudden onset of tics, the first thing that came up was PANDAS. Here is the story of their PANDAS Journey. #OurPANDASJourney
PANDAS (Pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections) is an autoimmune disease that affects 1 in 200 children. It is commonly misdiagnosed as a mental health issue opposed to a medical issue. Many parents spend years searching for doctors who will acknowledge and treat PANDAS, all the while their child is left to suffer from the debilitating disease. It is time for medical professionals to become aware of PANDAS and begin with helping to treat these families. This is one of many families' journeys with PANDAS.
