In September 2018, Indigenous forest monitors from the Ticuna community of Buen Jardín de Callaru in Peru discovered a large clearing on their territory using satellite data. They alerted the regional environmental prosecutor who agreed to accompany the community for an on-site investigation.
Since the launch of Rainforest Alert, our innovative, community-led rainforest monitoring program, Indigenous peoples equipped with satellite imagery, drones, and smartphones can better protect their rainforest territories and combat deforestation.
Scaling up Rainforest Alert across the Amazon would be the equivalent of removing 21 million cars from the road by curtailing carbon dioxide emissions from deforestation. And at a cost of only $3 per hectare per year.
