It’s generally accepted that the end of steam on the western region of British Railways arrived on the 27th of November 1965 (although examples exist after this date), marked by the ‘Farewell to Steam Special’ which was hauled out of London Paddington by BR(W) 4073 'Castle' Class - 7029 "Clun Castle". Almost exactly 60 years later, the occasion would be commemorated by 7029 “Clun Castle” hauling a railtour of the same name out of London Paddington; the first time a ‘Castle’ has worked a train out of Paddington since the railtour in 1965.
This 2025 edition began out of Birmingham New Street, working down to London Paddington in three legs with 7029 being supported by BR Class 37 - 37240. From London Paddington, 7029 would lead a charge over the length of the Great Western Mainline to Bristol Temple Meads. After a break, 7029 would work the tour back to Birmingham for ins conclusion.
The sight of a ‘Castle’ at Paddington proved too tempting; 7029 captured simmering away prior to its departure. Moving west, the ‘Castle’ would produce theatrics at Maidenhead as it coasted into the station before laying its power down, accelerating out of the station in style. Finally, in dying light, 7029 is seen at speed passing Grove Wick at Challow Loops, getting away from a water-stop at Milton Junction.
