India–Canada Ties Revived

Canada and India have moved to reset ties with a ministerial-level push on trade, energy and technology after a prolonged chill in relations. Foreign Ministers Anita Anand and Dr. S. Jaishankar met in New Delhi and issued a joint “new roadmap” that revives talks on trade and investment, relaunches the Energy Dialogue, and prioritizes cooperation in critical minerals, agriculture, science and technology, AI, and civil nuclear engagement. The effort follows steps since June—leader-level guidance at the G7, reinstatement of High Commissioners, and security-law enforcement dialogues—to rebuild confidence and normalize diplomatic channels. The roadmap also underscores protection of diplomats, respect for sovereignty, and coordination against transnational organized crime. Context matters: with recent US tariff actions raising costs and uncertainty, Ottawa is accelerating diversification toward major markets like India’s large, fast-growing economy. Both sides frame the reset as development-first, aiming to translate sectoral cooperation into jobs, innovation, resilient supply chains, and more predictable market access.
