Distaff Day is traditionally associated with the return to women’s work after the holidays, especially spinning. Historically, that work was not a hobby or a creative outlet. It was necessary labor that kept households clothed and functioning.
I am spinning a braid of merino bamboo silk into a three-ply DK weight yarn, working in pieces over several days. Some of this footage was filmed earlier, some later, because that is how the work actually happens for me. I am a spinner, a mother to a toddler, and I work full time. My making time depends on naps lining up, bedtime going smoothly, and having support from my partner.
In this video, I talk about women’s labor then and now, the difference between survival work and hobby work, and the support structures that make creative time possible today. I did not finish the yarn during Distaff Day, and that felt appropriate and relevant to the discussion.
Welcome to my first video on my channel, Needle Wheel Loom. I'd love to have you follow me on Instagram @needle_wheel_loom as well. I plan to share more project videos, process videos, and other discussions in future videos.
Thank you for spending some time at the wheel with me.
