European leaders step into the spotlight at Davos on Tuesday, hoping to steady fraying transatlantic ties before US President Donald Trump arrives with fresh tariff threats aimed at the EU over Greenland. Trump is set to dominate the World Economic Forum this week, as Washington’s hard-edged agenda rattles allies and forces Europe to weigh its response.
Trump said he doesn’t expect too much pushback on his Greenland plan, ahead of his meetings at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Taking aim at the French president, Trump posted a screenshot of a message from Emmanuel Macron questioning the US position on Greenland. Trump also dismissed Macron’s decision not to join the “Board of Peace” aimed at rebuilding Gaza, saying “nobody wants him.” Russian President Vladimir Putin is among those invited to join the board.
The US president, Donald Trump, has suggested Britain’s decision to cede the Chagos Islands to Mauritius is among the reasons he wants to take over Greenland.
In a Truth Social post, he said the UK’s plan to hand over sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius is an “an act of GREAT STUPIDITY”. He said: Shockingly, our “brilliant” NATO Ally, the United Kingdom, is currently planning to give away the Island of Diego Garcia, the site of a vital U.S. Military Base, to Mauritius, and to do so FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER.
