In this video, scholars discuss Eatonville, Florida’s founding and history as the first incorporated Black municipality in the country. Founded by freedpeople in 1887, Eatonville embodied the promises of the Reconstruction era and political equality. The scholars explain how religion and education served as pillars for Eatonville residents' sense of political autonomy.
