I am the only one in the office this morning, sitting at my desk high above the city. My role is simple but heavy: I am the caretaker of an old internal tool that no one wants to touch anymore. Overnight, a report failed to generate, and if it stays broken, an entire team will lose today’s work. My goal is to bring it back before people start arriving.

Sunlight fills the room through the wide glass windows. The city below looks calm, almost unreal, with mountains resting quietly in the distance. I straighten my chair, place both hands on the keyboard, and begin. No headphones today. I want to hear the soft hum of the room, to stay grounded.

The code on my monitor is familiar and uncomfortable at the same time. Old conventions, unclear names, comments that explain nothing. I trace the flow slowly, leaving small notes for myself. “Don’t rush,” I say out loud, even though no one can hear me. The clock in the corner of the screen keeps moving.

One test fails, then another. I narrow the scope, cut the problem down, and run it again. That’s when I notice a value that doesn’t belong. Just one setting, quietly inherited from years ago, still shaping everything around it. I lean closer to the screen. “So it was you.”

I change the value, save the file, and run the process once more. The progress indicator advances without hesitation. The numbers line up. No warnings. No errors. I let my shoulders drop for the first time since I sat down.

The city outside is fully awake now. I look out through the glass, take a slow breath, and shut the terminal. The task is finished, but the tool remains. I know I’ll be back here again. For now, this clear morning is enough.
