🎶Il Canto degli Italiani🎶
“Il Canto degli Italiani” (“The Song of the Italians”) is a patriotic song written by Goffredo Mameli and composed by Michele Novaro in 1847. It’s widely known in Italy as “Inno di Mameli” (“Mameli’s Hymn”) or “Fratelli d’Italia” (“Brothers of Italy”) from its opening line.
The piece is in B-flat major, has six stanzas, and a refrain sung after each one. The sixth stanza is rarely performed and basically echoes the first.
The song became super popular during Italy’s unification. But after the Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed in 1861, its strong republican/Jacobin tone didn’t vibe with the new monarchy, so the kingdom used the “Marcia Reale” (Royal March) instead.
After World War II, Italy became a republic.
On 12 October 1946, the country adopted “Il Canto degli Italiani” as a temporary anthem.
It stayed the de facto anthem until it finally became official on 4 December 2017.
