On the southern part of the Cookes Range is a canyon where an estimated 400 people lost their lives by ambush over a 30 year period. Cooke's Canyon is on the Butterfield overland mail route that transported mail and people across the United States. This is also the area of Cookes Spring names after a Mormon Battalion leader attracted people to the area for thousands of years. Petroglyphs show evidence of ancient inhabitants. Fort Cummings was also in the area to protect settlers as they came across the desert, protecting them from Apache warriors.
Sorry about the wind. Its always windy there.
