In this video, I’m going back in time to 1987. I share memories from Poland, where I was interpreting for a wonderful group of foreigners from different countries. What started as a simple job turned into a truly life-changing journey.
One of the visitors was from England — and in 1991, he became my husband.
Another was Louisa from New Zealand, a dear friend whose path crossed ours all those years ago.
You’ll see old photos from Szczyrk, Poland (1987) and follow our story as, 38 years later, we set off on a new adventure — travelling to see Louisa again, this time in her home in Whanganui.
What we didn’t expect was to discover her huge collection of British-made plates covering the walls! Each collection seemed to have its own story, and we were absolutely delighted by the surprise.
Most of all, we were incredibly excited to see Louisa again after so many years — a beautiful reminder of how friendships can last a lifetime.
After 2.5 hours of driving, and counting more road cones than sheep, we arrived in Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city. Wellington is famously built on very steep hills, and the drive up to our hotel definitely proved that — it was extremely steep and unforgettable!
Thankfully, we were rewarded on arrival with a fun surprise: flowing chocolate from a “chocolate mountain”. A very Wellington-style welcome to a compact city known for its hills, harbour views and windy weather for sure!
